Maria Sharapova will play at the championship in Dubai

The Russian five-time winner of the Grand Slam Tournament will play at the Dubai Championship for the first time since 2006.

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova is going to return to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The last time she played in the championship in 2006. Here she defeated former champion Martina Hingis, as well as defending the title Lindsay Davenport, before reaching the final with another former champion Justine Henin.

Sharapova is one of the greatest players in the world over the past 15 years. To date, she has earned 36 titles, including at the Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon, and twice at Roland Garros. She also won the WTA finals in 2004, the Federation Cup in 2008, and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Colm McLaughlin, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Duty Free, noted that Sharapova is waiting for strong competitors, claiming the title in Dubai.

The championship in Dubai will run from February 19 to March 3.
