Dubai resident will spend a year in prison for insulting religion on Facebook

The foreigner, accused of insulting Islam on social networks, was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 0.5 million dirhams.

A Dubai court convicted a 31-year-old Indian worker of insulting Islam by posting a message on his Facebook account. The man was sentenced to imprisonment for one year with subsequent deportation and a fine of 500 thousand dirhams ($ 136.1 thousand).

A complaint was filed on November 6 last year by another Indian. The defendant tried to leave the UAE shortly after the publication of reports, but was arrested. His mobile phone, with which he made the publication, was seized.

Despite the fact that the accused managed to delete all offensive messages, their copies were saved, translated and used as evidence in the case against him.

According to the General Directorate of Evidence in Criminal Matters, the respondent’s Facebook account was used on his own mobile phone. Last time he used his account on November 7th. No hacking factors found. It is not yet clear whether another person could access this account using a third-party device.

A court decision may be appealed within 15 days.
