The second part of the film trilogy of Peter Jackson was called "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." Initially, the film was supposed to be an apocrypha, telling about the decades between the events of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”, but such shooting was impossible. The script for the film was written by Fran Walsh, Philippe Boyens, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro. This film, like the first part, was shot on high-definition RED Epic cameras at 48 frames per second. The first film block took place mostly in the pavilions - in New Zealand from March to May - autumn, from June to August - winter. The second film block consisted of filming “in kind”. According to director Peter Jackson, such a distribution of the filming cycle was due to the light regime. Filming in kind should have taken place at least 12 hours a day, which in winter was almost impossible to do because of the early onset of darkness. Therefore, at the end of October and the first half of November 2011, the film crews worked primarily in different territories of the South Island: some filmed on the northernmost part of the island, in Nelson County, others in the southeastern part of Otago County.
