Dubai bans city electric transport

Electric scooters are banned in Dubai.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has indefinitely banned the use of electric scooters on sidewalks. The regulator states that this step is aimed at studying appropriate technologies, reducing the threat to pedestrians and, ultimately, at adopting new laws. Earlier, the same bans were adopted in France and Spain.

According to the RTA, the use of electric scooters on roads and sidewalks is very dangerous due to the lack of allocated lanes.

Recently, several start-ups started in Dubai, which rent electric scooters for short-term rent. Some of them have already received notice from the authorities. On March 8, Dubai-based KIWIride announced on Instagram that Dubai police had asked to stop its activities in several residential areas of the city.

Skoot Mobility, which was due to launch in Dubai on March 6, announced on the eve of its first day that it had postponed the launch. In a conversation with the media, company representatives said they were interacting with regulators and were awaiting permission to begin work in the emirate.
