A new terminal will open at the airport of the emirate of Sharjah

This spring, a new terminal for arriving passengers will open at the Sharjah Emirate International Airport.

In April this year, for passengers arriving in the United Arab Emirates, a new terminal will open at the Sharjah Emirate International Airport. It will be equipped with self-service desks and advanced parking lots. This was reported by a representative of the administration of Sharjah International Airport (SIAA).

The new terminal is almost complete and is expected to serve 12 million passengers from 120 destinations worldwide this year.

Speaking as part of the Sharjah Innovation Week, which ended Wednesday, SIAA CEO Sheikh Faisal bin Saud Al Kassimi said the construction was part of a project for expanding Sharjah Airport worth AED 1.5 billion ($ US 408 million).

Al Kassimi added that the development of airport infrastructure will help attract international airlines for flights from Sharjah to American, Asian and European cities. The phased airport development project also includes the expansion of the road network.

The expansion of the airport is expected to increase the capacity of Sharjah International Airport to 20 million passengers by 2027.

The development plan also includes equipping the airport with modern devices, such as smart gateways, which facilitate the rapid movement of passengers and significantly reduce processing time. Self-service racks provide a smooth passage.

Al Kassimi emphasized that the expansion of Sharjah Airport will significantly increase the number of passengers visiting the emirate, and, accordingly, accelerate the economic growth of Sharjah and the creation of new jobs in various sectors.

He added: "The growth in Sharjah International Airport was due to the success of inbound tourism and Air Arabia Airlines, headquartered in Sharjah. The proximity of the airport to Dubai and the main highways connecting the seven emirates of the country made it a convenient center for business and travelers."

Between January and December 2016, the airport served 11 million passengers, which is 10 percent more compared to 2015.
